CWHC - Sanctuary - Hero 1

About Us

The Claremont Wynberg Hebrew Congregation (Kehillat Agudat Achim) is a vibrant, warm and dynamic Orthodox Shul in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town.

The Shul is a combination of the Claremont and former Wynberg Congregations, both of which functioned independently for more than a century and joined forces in 2006. The Shul is a proud member of the Union of Orthodox Synagogues (UOS) of South Africa, an umbrella body of all Orthodox congregations in the country.

We are privileged to have Rabbi and Rebbetzin Lee Liebenberg who joined CWHC in 2001 and serve as our rabbinical couple, overseeing all communal matters. The Shul’s Rabbi Emeritus is Rabbi Dr Ivan Lerner who, together with his wife, Arleeta, transformed the Shul into a major educational and social force during their decade-long tenure in Cape Town.

The Shul offers daily prayer services as well as a host of religious, social and educational programmes for all ages. We also have a fun and well organized youth service. We are the hosts of the CWEST (Claremont Wynberg Education for Spirituality and Torah) adult learning programme, which brings a host of local and international speakers to the community. On Shabbat and Chaggim, we encourage our congregants to participate in the services, which are followed by a legendary kiddush brocha.

We have a beautiful campus featuring a large traditional Shul, a smaller, ultra-modern Beit Midrash, youth facilities, an impressive library of Torah books, in Hebrew and English, and a banqueting hall with a milk kitchen which caters for functions, simchas and our world renowned sit-down Kiddush Brochah on Shabbat and Festival mornings.

Please feel free to join us for services. We welcome all visitors, however, arrangements must be made with the office in advance for those visiting for the first time. We look forward to seeing you at Shul when you are next in Cape Town. Shalom u’Brachah.
